Waikoloa Solar + Storage Site

Waikoloa, Hawaii

A 300-acre solar and storage project is currently underway in Waikoloa, located in the District of South Kohala on the Big Island of Hawa’ii.

In 2008, the Hawai’i Clean Energy Initiative (HCEI) was established, creating  a framework to support the commitment to Hawai’i’s clean energy future. The goal is to reduce the state’s reliance on imported fossil fuel and produce 100% of electricity from renewable energy sources by the year 2045. A 300-acre solar and storage project is currently underway in Waikoloa, located in the District of South Kohala on the Big Island of Hawa’ii. The 120 MWh containerized lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) feeds into the Hawaiian Electric (HECO) grid, providing power to customers. 3J is providing civil engineering services to design improvements for the new 60 MW-AC ground mount solar plant. Upon completion, the project is anticipated to contribute approximately 7.1% of Hawai’i Island’s energy needs*
