As the city’s first major civic investment in decades, the City of North Plains Public Works Facility is a symbol of North Plains’ emergence as a modern, connected, and resilient community.
3J worked closely with the City of North Plains to deliver a new public works facility that meets current City needs and accommodates future expansion over the next 20 years. Named after Robert “Butch” Kindel, a longtime resident of North Plains who has worked with City government for over 50 years, the 12,000-sf, two-story building houses all core city services in one building. Prior to this project, the city’s Public Works, Police, Planning, Utility Billing, City Administration, and equipment storage were spread across multiple outdated facilities built over 50 years ago. The project also includes a four-bay garage to provide covered parking for fleet services, maintenance of vehicles, and yard storage for materials and equipment.
The facility was designed to act as an Emergency Operations Center, including an onsite generator capable of powering both the operations center and an adjacent two-million-gallon water reservoir, ensuring continuity of service during emergencies and making the City
of North Plains more resilient to hazards. 3J provided land use planning, civil engineering, water resources engineering, and construction inspection.
